I Don’t Know WHAT to Do With This…

“Microsoft is having an event on energy technology with the far-rightwing fringe Discovery Institute. Wow. I am sure that no-one will have a problem with that and it won’t be a PR disaster for them. What’s next?”

Dateline Earth

Seattle Post-Intelligencer reporters Lisa Stiffler and Robert McClure dish up enviro tidbits from around the region and across the globe — stuff you might have missed, cool environmental happenings locally and speedy updates for ongoing issues.

“Microsoft joins intelligent designers to bring you plug in vehicles”

So Microsoft is joining up with the Discovery Institute, the folks who brought intelligent design/creationism to the fore of the public debate, for a day-long meeting on flexible-fuel plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. Supporting cast includes Climate Solutions, the greenie global warming group for the state, and Washington Policy Center, a tireless opponent of enviro regulations.

You have to give the organizers credit for pulling together a real diversity of opinions for what sounds like it could be a very interesting meeting, but I just cannot imagine the planning sessions for this event, which will be held in Redmond on May 7 at the Microsoft campus.

(And to be fair, on DI’s website, it bills itself as focused on “regional transportation development, economics and technology policy, legal reform, and bioethics,” though its well-funded promotion of intelligent design is how it gained fame.)

The thrust of the event is summed up thusly:

Experts will discuss U.S. energy security, integrating flexible-fuel plug-ins into the U.S. utility industry, and government’s vital role in the transition. Panels will probe topics including climate change, national security, vehicles and technology, and federal and state government actions.

They’re also the guys behind the Iraq invasion with their grand plan of bringing democracy to the middle east by toppling the gov’ts of Iraq, Syria and Iran in quick succession.

Of course we know how that went.
