Charlie Crist In the News Today, Both Surprising and Not

5 03 2008

He gave our State of the State address last night, timed for maximum national exposure to potential veep pickers. No surprise there.

But seriously, THIS is a big surprise for us long-time Florida Capitol watchers! It just came through the local newspaper’s afternoon update:

Gov. Charlie Crist has a private word with Carole Rome of Miami, whom he introduced as “my girlfriend” at the Governor’s Mansion annual party Tuesday night.

But when I went to the paper’s website to see the photo, the cutline has changed! No mention of the word “girlfriend” online now, so I’ll bet there’s even more story to this story . . .

Now it reads:

“Gov. Charlie Crist and Carole Rome of Miami have a word as they make the rounds of his session-opening reception and dinner Tuesday night at the Governor’s Mansion.”

Anybody else been around long enough to remember Gov. Kirk and Madame X? 😉

No name adorned the lady’s place card at the Governor’s inaugural dinner.
The seating chart showed only an X to identify the stunning, green-eyed blonde at the side of Florida’s newly installed Republican Governor, Claude Kirk, 41. Next day the two disappeared mysteriously, but the ex-husband of Madame X helpfully tried to clear up the puzzle by announcing at his home in Rio de Janeiro that the lady, German-born Erika Mittfeld, 28, would soon marry the Governor, who was divorced last March. Reporters caught up with the couple at the Ocean Reef Club on Key Largo, where they were spending a few days, but the Governor blandly came out with the classic “We’re just friends—that’s all.”

This popped up as related, while I was doing something else today. I didn’t realize this well-worn storyline had appeared in “print” from any “news” source —

And then I saw this. So his “populist streak” will get the rap if he’s not chosen for the ticket??
