Don’t Miss the First “Talk Like a Physicist” Day

6 03 2008

This could be as big a holy-day as Talk Like A Pirate Day!

Next Friday, March 14 — that’s 3.14, get it, get it? — is the first annual Talk Like a Physicist Day. And see Twisted Physics for celebratory physics cocktail recipes in the left sidebar like “Quantum Theory” and “Combustible Edison,” in case you can work some hard partying into your evolved homeschooling that day.

Oh, and here’s something just for Not June Cleaver:

Rolfe, can you explain the thought bubble above June Cleaver’s head, please?

Does this mean I won’t get any pie??!!

We normally celebrate Pi Day which is a good excuse for pie. Now this!

Who are these “physicists?”

Why are they threatening my right to eat apple, and sometimes key lime, pie? What have they got against pie?

It’s unAmerican, I tell you!

Oh, surely pi (all varieties) will be the traditional holiday confection for this new observance? 😉

Well, maybe I *AM* June Cleaver afterall. Those thoughts are always running through my mind.

As long as you’re also pondering pie recipes, Not June. 🙂

As a matter of fact, in that picture, I was actually calculating a very complicated recipe conversion, so yes.

And how about some pies for throwing in the face of public officials who pander to anti-science wackos and thereby work against the interests of the country they supposedly are elected to protect and serve? — wouldn’t that be in the spirit of the occasion?

We could do that right here at Snook, hmmm – host a pie tossing contest! Entrants say what appropriate ingredients they are baking into the pie and whose face it’s meant for.

Video of the celebrations! 🙂

That IS excellent:

Again: most sensible conservative commentators are quick to say “of course, all things being equal, it’s better to be correct/intelligent/scientific than otherwise.” But they truly don’t believe that all things are equal.

The real fight isn’t against science, it’s a much broader culture war. Science is being used as a stand-in for a constellation of things against which many Americans react viscerally — elitism, paternalism, snobbery. Presenting better science and more transparent evidence isn’t going to change this attitude all by itself. We need to address the underlying cause: the relic anti-intellectual attitude that still animates so many people in this country.

Dunno about including “paternalism” in the list, because I see conservative Christianity and its anti-science as paternalism, not liberal education or the scientific method. (Could be all Americans react viscerally to paternalism but then we project it onto others, can’t tolerate the idea that anything we’re part of is paternalistic? Hmmm. . .)

Otherwise, it’s right on. I know many — too many! — homeschool “advocates” like this. I’ve been singled out online a couple of times by them, in fact, as an intellectual to be flamed in effigy while the local halfwits wave their pitchforks in solidarity. They suspect my vocabulary is some kind of spell-casting, maybe?
