“Hey Mr. Cunningham!” a Must-Read at Meming of Life

14 06 2008

This wonderful old-movie post ties to everything we’re learning and discussing here, about how we talk to each other about memes that matter (and why we too often can’t.)

That’s the way the caricature crumbles — one person at a time.

Not to mention that you’ll learn a useful new way to define liberal and conservative, which if you’re a Thinking Parent, might even make you rethink how you think of yourself.

I’ve been doing a lot of that myself, come to think of it:

I connect these in my own mind — small towns and big hearts, racial and social and economic justice, words and music and story with real meaning for real people, characters we care enough about to “step into their skin” for a little while and begin to understand, and become better ourselves for it.

Wow. Thanks for the link to that post. It was really moving. I think I might have to officially come out of the atheist closet now. 🙂

Nance will probably be waiting for you with balloons and a kazoo. . .

Come on out, Colleen. First, you’ll be amazed that nobody cares and then it will actually come in handy now and then.

Tough economic times — will more people suddenly come out of the atheist closet? “No, we don’t celebrate that (expensive) holiday. It’s just another great day with our family.”

Used to spend time memorizing religious texts? Now you get to sleep in or read the newspaper and think about what’s going on in the real world!

Trying to make a tough decision? You get to use your brain! Think about what is best for you and yours and go for it. Unencumbered by having to mumble the right religious phrases and justifications.

What else? How would being an atheist come in handy in your life?

Come on out. The water’s fine! 🙂

LOL – all our mixed metaphors just gave me quite an image! Colleen in a puffy life jacket gingerly stepping out of the stuffy dark closet, not into a larger room but right over the doorjamb into a lake, upon which floats Nance on her sun-drenched, balloon-filled barge, in her flipflops reading a newspaper.

Colleen asks where JJ is on this fine day and Nance replies, oh, she’s in the closet screening some movies. . .

Ha! As I read that I imagined myself tripping over the door jamb and falling face first into the water. I had to go back and read a second time to see if you’d put that in or if it was just my imagination! 🙂

I will be happy to share my barge with everyone! 🙂
