Stupid Power of Story — Just Got Trapped in a Gas Panic

12 09 2008

Betty’s right. The American people in cynically whipped-up news-cycle crowds, are just downright stupid. A danger to themselves and OTHERS, which would include me and my kids. . .so if Sarah Palin is the patron saint of Big Oil and Stupid People, this is what her ticket’s America would be like?

JJ is quite hungry and cross.

From the afternoon update to my Tallahassee Democrat, too late to save me innocently venturing out into the middle of bedlam:
. . .Rumors of a fuel shortage spread like wildfire across the state, prompting Agriculture and Consumers Services Commissioner Charlie Bronson to call a late afternoon press conference.

“There is no fuel shortage in Florida,” Bronson said. “There’s hundreds of millions of gallons available.”

. . .A fuel panic swept Gainesville on Thursday, where long gas lines spilled over onto a busy thoroughfare, tempers flared and the police were called, said Randy Bly, a spokesman for AAA Auto Club South.

“Our office has been flooded with calls,” Bly said “This was consumer -driven, it was like a run on the bank. There really is no shortage, we are well supplied. . .”

Well, there was one guy ahead of me at the Circle K just now. Does that count? 🙂

OTOH, neither one of us was buying gas. . .

When we do buy gas, we are paying $3.65 a gallon. What’s it cost near you?

Heck, can’t get closer than a couple of blocks to it all of a sudden, how would I know??
The only reason I was finally able to get milk at our neighborhood Circle K is that all the gas pumps were sold out and the price signs blank.

Until yesterday though I think it was several pennies less than your price.

But this afternoon, there was a photo with the story reading $5.49 — and that place usually is the cheapest fill-up in town!

Understand I wasn’t even trying to BUY gas. I was just trying to get around town, pick up kids, get to the dance shop for some character shoes FavD needs for the new show. I had promised Young Son a weekend batch of bagels, and I needed to go to the bank. . but everywhere I went, I was blocked and trapped. The cars were lined up onto the thoroughfares, blocking intersections, and not budging. You couldn’t get around them, or turn around to try another route. No cops or anyone else even attempting to direct traffic or put out orange cones, etc.

And think about it, how many ways can you get where you want to go in your town without passing a damn gas station somewhere along the way? The stupid people panic was holding up city buses, and school buses, you name it. An ambulance or fire truck would have had to take some real risks or just not be able to help some people in real need. What a stupid, pointless, adrenaline overload mess.

Last night I went to put in $20 and the gas station was packed, I had no idea why. I asked the clerk in the grocery store and they said that prices were going up tomorrow. I was like well that is lovely. The stations already purchased this gas so they are ripping us off for hype, fear and panic. I agree with the stupid people post girl 🙂

I had my car in the shop today and the manager told me that her heard from another customer who works for the local fuel wholesaler that prices would be going up 50 cents to a dollar tomorrow. I filled up on the way one.

Our corner gas station price went up 11 cents by evening yesterday. So far this storm isn’t looking that bad. Who knows but if it’s not that bad should I expect the price to go back down? 🙂

The big evening plans are off — Obama decided to be all serious and classy and not appear on SNL — http://blogs.reuters.com/trail08/2008/09/12/ike-leads-obama-to-cancel-saturday-night-live-appearance/.

Well, I guess if he wants to look Presidential but the other guy had no such problem and he’s doing OK in the polls — http://culturekitchen.com/mole333/blog/katrina_george_bush_john_mccain_and_cake.

Or maybe people will start to pay attention again and decide they really do want a grownup with a clue to be their President?

I wonder if that means the Democrats have some kind of ad ready against the Bush-Rove Republicans, something that hits on all the recent over-the-top media games?

Btw I just happened upon a bog with 120,000 women responding to it already, including fiscally unhappy Republican women, called Women Against Sarah Palin. Frisky female cock of the snook to Lynn.

Nance,
I just checked out the site you posted…Yeah, and thanks..someone speaking my thoughts…so perhaps I’m half lemming too..but somehow I don’t feel so alone in my fear that the whole female population of the United States would somehow begin wearing patent leather pumps, perfectly tailored dresses that hit at the the perfect spot just below the knee, with perfectly coiffured hair (delightfully swept up in a “casual” updo), white teeth flashing a perfectly content lipsticked smile…Oh, My God…I get it..I know what all those Karl Rove, Bush and McCain Republican cronies have done…They’ve engineered a Stepford wife…and planted her in Alaska…just waiting for this day to come…Okay, now I’m being really mean..

My apologies to ….I don’t know..to whomever I’ve insulted. I just “feel” all that adrenaline that JJ was writing about!! I feel petty, mean, vindictive, angry, insulting, rude, obnoxious….I need to go meditate..find my center…I highly recommend Women Against Sarah Palin..I’m going to start a local chapter!!

Betty —

You’ve got nothing to apologize about! These bastards are good at what they do which has been to get us all looking the other way for a week.

I was watching some of the Sunday morning talk shows and they are still cycling through the lipstick garbage but they are at the end of it.

And beginning to use the word “lie” more.

Maybe beginning to see the damage we are all doing when we lose sight of the real issues that people care about and let the Rovebots dictate the agenda.

Off to see the Women Against Palin site that JJ found — they sound like my kind of gals. 🙂
