Obama’s victory speech — in case you feel asleep before this, like I did. 🙂

Are you kidding?? Who could sleep? 🙂
(“Watch out! They get you while you’re sleeping!”)

I had the enormous privilege of watching and cheering and choking up now and then, into the wee hours with three young people — FavD, boyfriend and brilliant girlfriend — now so beautifully and perfectly attuned to their times and their generation, and to their nation, that I swear I could see them connecting and transforming together as it happened, much the way Obama himself has seemed to transform into president right before our eyes in this campaign.

It was beyond words, even for me!

And isn’t Jill Biden just the happiest, freshest face every time you see her?

FavD saw her at the rally here Sunday, and Joe Biden was so engaged watching her speak, laughing and clapping and supporting her. She told the story of when she earned her education doctorate, and he was so proud that when she came home, the driveway was painted with “Home of Doctor and Senator Biden” — it is the dawning of the age of intelligence!

YEAH!!!!!! It’s all the intelligence I can muster after working the polls for the Obama campaign from 4:00 am on election day through the entire day, calling people to get out the vote, and on into the wee hours of Wednesday morning as we watched hopefully, with anticipation to see if Indiana would go blue!! and it did!! I can’t help believing that all the hours that Em and I worked for the campaign helped make a difference and what a fantastic engaged feeling that is for both of us. My little girl, turning a woman, with the same hopefulness that JJ’s daughter feels. That we can make a difference, that our young people are accepting a mantle of volunteerism and belief in a kinder, gentler America that truly cares about its citizens, not just the top dogs. I am so happy. I cried, watching the speech, literally sobbing, remembering that my brother who died in Viet Nam, marched in the streets of Selma with Martin Luther King..and I know how joyful he would have been!! To see this day, in the America he fought and died for. See we progressives can be patriotic too! Amazing day, amazing times and now we roll up our sleeves and get to work creating an Amazing America.

Amazing also because it’s so academically authentic and educationally excellent, what a relief after Stupid on the Stump for so long.

America Gets a Professor in Chief

The 2008 presidential election has broken so many political barriers
that historians may overlook one unusual fact: When Barack Obama takes the oath of office next January alongside his running mate, Joe Biden, it will be the first time in history that the president, vice president, and both of their spouses have worked in higher education.

Taken together, the Obamas and the Bidens have amassed decades of experience at colleges and universities. . .

p.s. Just heard Tina Fey announcing the “Sarah Palin” all us smart people appreciated as entertainment has been retired, period. The Sarah Palin who claims to be real, the one stupid people enjoy so much, may overstay her 15 minutes of freak value like Tanya Harding for example, perhaps go on the road with Joe the Plumber as a mud-wrestling exhibition duo or whatever — but the smart version is O-V-E-R over!

And we all really enjoyed the Harvard Law professor who first met Michelle Obama in 1985, being both smart and entertaining about who they are and how they’ll be in the White House, on the Stewart-Colbert election “Indecision” special.

Let the sun shine in.
All you have to do is change one word and the 40-year-old lyrics fit. (Or maybe we’re all just having acid flashbacks?)

This is the dawning of the age of Intelligence
The age of Intelligence,

Harmony and understanding
Sympathy and trust abounding,
No more falsehoods or derisions
Golden living dreams of visions
Mystic crystal revelation
And the mind’s true liberation,

Let the sun shine, Let the sun shine in
The sun shine in
Let the sun shine, Let the sun shine in
The sun shine in.

Oh JJ, you should put that on YouTube, it’s great!

You’re welcome to do anything with it you know how to do, Meg, please! 🙂

Cognitive psychology! And he’s mainly psyching out himself, not the other guy.
No wonder this man resonates with us thinkers, writers, analysts, academics and professors, the self-examined and self-educated, the whole smart and funny creative class. . .

Obama was something unusual in a politician: genuinely self-aware. In late May 2007, he had stumbled through a couple of early debates and was feeling uncertain about what he called his “uneven” performance.

“Part of it is psychological,” he told his aides. “I’m still wrapping my head around doing this in a way that I think the other candidates just aren’t. There’s a certain ambivalence in my character that I like about myself. It’s part of what makes me a good writer, you know? It’s not necessarily useful in a presidential campaign.”

These candid remarks were taped at a debate-prep session at a law firm in Washington. The tape of Obama’s back-and-forth with his advisers, provided to NEWSWEEK by an attendee, is a remarkably frank and revealing record of what the candidate was really thinking when he took the stage with his opponents.
