Smart President Both Fun-ny and Serious

5 11 2008

Smart and funny go together.  (Moms with smart kids learn this early.)

And we all know how the stupidity of a question can constrain the smartness of the answer (unless one means smart as in smarta*s!) From Newsweek today:

The debates unnerved both candidates. When he was preparing for them during the Democratic primaries, Obama was recorded saying, “I don’t consider this to be a good format for me, which makes me more cautious. I often find myself trapped by the questions and thinking to myself, ‘You know, this is a stupid question, but let me … answer it.’

So when Brian Williams is asking me about what’s a personal thing that you’ve done [that’s green], and I say, you know, ‘Well, I planted a bunch of trees.’ And he says, ‘I’m talking about personal.’

What I’m thinking in my head is, ‘Well, the truth is, Brian, we can’t solve global warming because I f—ing changed light bulbs in my house. It’s because of something collective’.”

See, both smart and funny, about stupid questions!
Of course there’s dead-serious too. . .here’s something for example, that smart folks knew must be true at the time though it wasn’t being reported; JJ blogged it October 7, as smart people may remember. 🙂
And stupid people who didn’t know it or wouldn’t admit it, are not funny. They are part of the threat.

The Obama campaign was provided with reports from the Secret Service showing a sharp and disturbing increase in threats to Obama in September and early October, at the same time that many crowds at Palin rallies became more frenzied.  Michelle Obama was shaken by the vituperative crowds and the hot rhetoric from the GOP candidates. “Why would they try to make people hate us?” Michelle asked a top campaign aide.

I’m with Michelle Obama on this. The whipped up crazies aren’t stopping either. (Her Blog That Must Not Be Named is an example) I thought this crazy bitter hatred would abate after the election…I was wrong.

Smart people are funnier…in part because they tend to have enough knowledge and insight to carry it off.

Watching Sarah Palin this week reminded me of Nicole Kidman as Mrs. Coulter in The Golden Compass. Lovely, feminine and beautifully dressed, choosing fine surroundings for herself when she can, believing she is being tough to save souls if not the world, and doing the bidding of the Magisterium no matter the cost, even if it’s her own child. . .

The First Dude would be her Golden Monkey daemon, maybe?

I read something today about the nurse who originally made the “infanticide” charge against Obama, even though the Republican sponsor of the bill in question, said himself that’s not what Obama was advocating by opposing his bill. She’s totally off the deep end now, talking about how sinful it is for women even to use contraceptives or choose sterilization at any point in their own lives, and so public policy must force them not to sin by forcing babies upon them, as “blessings.”

There is no way to reconcile with that. Any more than America can reconcile with the Taliban or the ayatollahs.

Adding info – euw, I Googled it for the source and it’s World Net Daily, of course. I choose not to link it but her name is Jill Stanek.

Is politic lying stupid, or smart in a smarmy way — or does it depend on whose side you’re on?

Adding from the campaign so I’ll have it when we need it next:
The Twelve Lies of Sarah Palin

. . .So for the record, let it be known that the candidate for vice-president for the GOP is a compulsive, repetitive, demonstrable liar. If you follow the links, here is the proof. I repeat: proof:

– She has lied about the Bridge To Nowhere. She ran for office favoring it, wore a sweatshirt defending it, and only gave it up when the federal congress, Senator McCain in particular, went ballistic. She kept the money anyway and favors funding Don Young’s Way, at twice the cost of the original bridge.

– She has lied about her firing of the town librarian and police chief of Wasilla, Alaska.

– She has lied about pressure on Alaska’s public safety commissioner to fire her ex-brother-in-law.

– She has lied about her previous statements on climate change.

– She has lied about Alaska’s contribution to America’s oil and gas production.

– She has lied about when she asked her daughters for their permission for her to run for vice-president.

– She has lied about the actual progress in constructing a natural gas pipeline from Alaska.

– She has lied about Obama’s position on habeas corpus.

– She has lied about her alleged tolerance of homosexuality.

– She has lied about the use or non-use of a TelePrompter at the St Paul convention.

– She has lied about her alleged pay-cut as mayor of Wasilla.

– She has lied about what Alaska’s state scientists concluded about the health of the polar bear population in Alaska.

You cannot trust a word she says. On anything.
