Remember I showed you a close-up of his “sporran” last week?  Young Son’s pipe major has been impressing upon him that the whole outfit is a military uniform, so just for fun, I checked out the official U.S. Coast Guard Pipe Band Uniform regulations for an example of how one properly wears this intriguing item about which none of us ever learned in school!

306. SPORRAN & SPORRAN STRAP
306.1 – Dress Sporran – Military pattern hair sporran with heavy cast thistle cantle of approved pattern in gold tone gilt for Active, Retired and Reservist and silver for Auxiliarist with a Small Coast Guard emblem in silver and gold tones centered on cantle.  Two hair tails with gilt gold tone or silver bells as appropriate to the member’s service.  Sporran same style as J. Higgins catalogue no. PSSQ.

306.1.1 – Piper’s Sporran – white body hair, and two black hair tails suspended from thistle bells.

306.1.2 – Drummer’s Sporran – black body hair, with two white hair tails suspended from thistle bells.

306.1.3 – Sporran Strap – Plain black leather with buckle to match the color tone of the cantle and bells.

306.1.4 – How Worn – Sporran strap should fit snugly into groin with sporran strap buckle centered in back. The bottom of the hair should be worn level with the bottom of the kilt. Side and tenor drummers wear behind right hip on parade. All others centered in front of kilt, aligned with
waist belt buckle and button line of shirt/jacket.

306.1.5 – Care – Clean and brush hair periodically as for a natural hair wig. Store hung from a hanger allowing hair to fall naturally.
. . .
306.2 – Undress Sporran – Military pattern plain black leather with small Coast Guard Emblem centered on sporran below flap. Optional for all Band Members with the Daywear Uniforms.

306.2.1 – Sporran Strap – Plain black leather with buckle.

306.2.2 – How Worn – Sporran strap should fit snugly into groin with buckle centered in back. The top of the sporran should be worn a hand’s breadth below the bottom of the waist belt buckle. Side and tenor drummers wear behind right hip on parade. All others centered in front of kilt,  aligned with waist belt buckle and button line of shirt/jacket.

You gotta know that’s why he’s doing all this! — Shipping Up to Boston, whoa-oh oh.

He loves Gaelic Storm too. Have you seen the Lego version of their standard, “The Closest I’ve Come to Ending Up Dead, Was the Night That I Punched Russell Crowe, the Gladiator, in the Head”?

One of his intertubes favorites. . .

What great photos! I love the Lego video. I’d never seen that one or even heard of the band. I’m a big fan of Flogging Molly myself. 🙂

I wasn’t familiar with Gaelic Storm either but I like it.

Thanks to all you guys. It’s a big deal for me to post pictures of the kids at all, something I’ve only recently talked myself into doing because on balance, online isn’t as scary and unknown to me now. It’s been an educational wonderland for us all. But ask Nance, she’s known me the longest online and heard me agonize through all sorts of fears about parenting and about technology too — and heck, she and I still don’t use the kids’ names! It’s been like a protective talisman almost, for me. Nothing can hurt them if wackos don’t know their real names? — there’s an irrational but comforting belief!

Now that FavD is all grown up though, maybe I should finally tell y’all her name at least, what do you think? 😉

“Piper’s Sporran – white body hair, and two black hair tails suspended from thistle bells.”

This strikes me as something Jon Stewart would be able to put to good use.
