Really?

21 03 2010

They might actually pass a health insurance reform bill?

Something that might actually help real people?

I thought this thing was dead, really. And now they might actually accomplish something.

Hurray! Hurray with fingers crossed, anyway. 🙂

Not might but will. Somewhere around 11 p.m. tonight when the GOP finally runs out of ways to postpone the inevitable.

I’ve been watching all the widdle fox pups and friends today, pouncing and biting and making a mess on the carpet. Lots of despair and imbalance. 😦

I am excited! It just passed in the House!

We just got our home Internet connection back this weekend and I’ve been so tired, sore, frantic on the home front and out] of touch with the world– so this is great and sudden news imo.

It’s looking like it may well be a Pyrrhic victory. A friend of ours is challenging Barney Frank and he’s gotten a FLOOD of donations in the past 24 hours. If the folks in ultra-liberal MA are fed up with the Democrats in Congress, we could well be heading to a repeat of ’94.

The campaign of Rep. Randy Neugebauer’s (of “Baby Killer imfamy) is also being flooded with donations. In other words, it’s probably not MA “ultra-liberals” who are flooding Barney Frank’s challenger (Sean Bielat?) with money. 😉

And, who knows what the political landscape will look like in 24 *weeks* – after the dust has settled and “the overheated rhetoric over reform has finally confronted the reality of reform.” (Obama)

Running against healthcare just doesn’t seem like a winning formula to me. We’ll see. . .

Nancea: “Running against healthcare just doesn’t seem like a winning formula to me.”

Especially in Massachusetts, home of government mandated RomneyCare. To defeat Barney Frank, MA Teabaggers may have to rely instead on Party standards, like anti-gay slurs.

My favorite TV moment this week: Chris Matthews and “Your Mom Thinks You Won” 😉

Nance,

Sorry, I just noticed that I misspelled your name.

Then I realized that “Nancea” could be a fun nickname, pronounced Nan’-shuh, the way Rick Warren pronounces Tash’-a and Ma-li’-a! (Add Jazz hands for best effect.)
😀

Everyone always misspells my name. But they never include Jazz hands. Thanks! 🙂

Chris Matthews did nail that guy. And until the Rs come up with something a little more convincing sounding, and stop looking like such dicks by blocking everything in Congress, they aren’t going to help themselves with the public.

I came to post the same link! 😉
Smart, thoughtful perspective, actual news analysis.

“The real changes in America can’t be repealed.”
Nor kept down by the Grudging Old Patriarchy with gun moll spokesmodels and tea party lynch mobs. . . any more than those long advantaged as British gentlemen could resist the changes in New World Englishmen that turned us into a revolutionary nation in the first place. Ironic or just predictable?

America R Us and that “us” is who keeps changing.

And this behind-the-scene perspective on tea partier identity conflict is long overdue!

Frank Rich:

The conjunction of a black president and a female speaker of the House — topped off by a wise Latina on the Supreme Court and a powerful gay Congressional committee chairman — would sow fears of disenfranchisement among a dwindling and threatened minority in the country no matter what policies were in play. It’s not happenstance that Frank, Lewis and Cleaver — none of them major Democratic players in the health care push — received a major share of last weekend’s abuse. When you hear demonstrators chant the slogan “Take our country back!,” these are the people they want to take the country back from.

Too bad Rich doesn’t read my blog comments because then he’d know that the black conservatives featured on FOXNews are evidence that Teapartiers aren’t racist. Uh,… not that FOX represents Teapartiers, because it doesn’t. FOX is “fair and balanced,” unlike the Mainstream Media… [*head exploding*]

By the way, Teapartiers aren’t sexist either. “Just look at conservative women. They’re way hotter than liberal woman. After all, who’d you rather get in the sack: Michele Bachmann or Madeline Albright?…”

JJ: “And this behind-the-scene perspective on tea partier identity conflict is long overdue!”

Fascinating article on Partiers who are unemployed, with ample time for tea. It reminds me of the “Purpose-Driven” lives – and a false sense of higher calling – that Rick Warren sells to people (who also feel as though they’ve been overrun and left behind in their “own” country).

Imagine how scary it must be to be a teapartier. You have this self-image of superiority based on having the right color and sex and religion and sexual practices, etc., and these things mean you are better. Even if the rest of your life is shit, you are better. Then a bunch of people come along and start to tip the cart over. How unnerving!

It’s no wonder people turn to religion and garbage politics at times like that.

“Just look at conservative women. They’re way hotter than liberal woman. After all, who’d you rather get in the sack: Michele Bachmann or Madeline Albright?…”

There was actually an interesting study published a little over a year ago in the journal Current Anthropology that discussed how in societies where women tend to be less economically independent, the typical female waist/hip ratio is lower than in societies where women bear more responsibility for providing for themselves and their families. The authors write:

“‘The hormonal profile associated with high WHR … may favor success in resource competition, particularly under stressful circumstances. The androgenic effects – stamina, initiative, risk-proneness, assertiveness, dominance – should be particularly useful where a woman must depend on her own resources to support herself and her family.”

So there may be a biological reason underpinning the observation (which I definitely agree *IS* sexist BTW!) What is unclear is the direction of the causality.

Interesting study, though it doesn’t paint a pretty picture of men ~ LOL

But, it’s way better than the one that came out of the “(Rush) Limbaugh Institute for Advanced Conservative Studies,” which found that ugly women become liberal feminists when they realize that men aren’t attracted to them. [*rolling eyes*]

Also from the study summary —

Speaking of conservative men and their shapely women…

WASHINGTON — Under fire from both the right and the left, the Republican National Committee is investigating how and why it spent nearly $2,000 for “meals” at a bondage-themed strip club in West Hollywood featuring topless dancers simulating lesbian sex. (continued)
